On May 30th we will be going to the zoo in Indy. I will go with my wife and my 2 kids. My oldest is on a field trip for school. This is my question since it is a school field trip is carrying off limits. I will not be an official chaperone. The only reason I am going is because we will be leaving after the field trip to go to Atlanta for a family visit. Just because it is a school function off school property shouldnt make it off limits. My reasoning is what if another family is just there having a family day and happen to be close to the school kids. What is the difference?

I believe the rolling school zone ended a few years ago, so you should be OK. Just make sure you CC, they can kick you out.

There is no law against you carrying at the zoo while on a school field trip or any other time. You can't ride the school bus there or back while armed though.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but the Bill that would eliminate the "rolling school zone" won't become law until July 1.

The "rolling school zone" isn't in effect now; what we managed to avoid was it going BACK into effect on July 1st.

However, I should have included in my post above that the OP should read the IC for themselves and draw their own conclusions, or consult a lawyer.

i was there today as part of a school trip. I never left my car at the school, did the drop off line, drove a few kids there, and dropped them off at the school. I didn't carry as there were too many gray areas. If you drive yourself and you are just there you would be fine legally.

Yeah, as stated just no bus, but sounds like you're driving if you're then going to Atlanta... I know as long as I was driving myself etc, I would be carrying...

What zoo? Who owns the zoo? If it's city owned property he can't be kicked out

On May 30th we will be going to the zoo in Indy.

Indy zoo is private, not city owned.

I am driving myself and it is the Indy zoo. I do plan on CC. I don't want to test a grey area on this trip but in case I was discovered just trying to make sure it would t turn into a nightmare.

Carry is against zoo policy, but not illegal. The rolling school zone was repealed last year and reaffirmed this year permanently. Short answer; you can legally carry there on the field trip providing you don't ride the school bus. However, if you are discovered, the zoo can ask you to leave just like any other property owner could.

Mostly correct, BBI, however, the "after July 1" part of your post, while it is current IC, has been superseded by SEA 229, aka PL 157 (2014):

Trying to understand IC gives me a headache.

So after July 1st, you can legally carry a gun to a school function, such as a zoo, as long as you drive yourself? Not riding on the school bus?

And you can legally have your gun on school property, kept out of sight in your locked car?

    Or am I missing something?

    Yes you got it

because having it on the bus is a no go.
school function being defined as a field trip or similar. Can't carry to a football game ON school property.

Close. You can carry on a field trip now. The law was changed last July 1st. It would have reverted back to the original form if the state legislature hadn't made it permanent this past session. You're spot on about leaving it in your car. That doesn't take affect until this July 1st.

Make sure you CC, the Indy Zoo has a "No Weapons" policy and they will kick you out. I saw a guy a couple of years ago asked to leave because of this.

What if your private vehicle is a School bus? lol
