I've been running into a guy at the range who's having a heck of a lot of fun with an old Tokarev pistol. It makes lots of noise and smoke and throws brass about 30 feet! The gun was cheap and he says he gets the surplus ammo right too. So anyway it got me wondering ... who has a recommendation on a cheap/fun/reliable autoloader in a decent power round? You know, something reliable that's not going to break the bank and in a caliber that there's no shortage of cheap ammunition.

    I'm interested in any ideas.

How about a Czech CZ-82? 9mm Makarov caliber (9x18) is just a little hotter than .380, and ammo is relatively cheap. East bloc guns are generally well constructed, if simple in design.

Ammo is usually $9-10 a box for 50 rounds, or so.

I used to have a Russian Makarov pistol, which is sort of a knock-off of a Walther PPK in 9x18. Neat little gun, wish I had it back. I have been wanting one of these CZ-82's just to play with, but haven't gotten around to picking one up yet.

I was really close to picking up a Makarov at a gun show not that long ago. Talked the guy down to what I thought was a pretty decent price with some ammo, a pistol rug, and 2 sets of grips. Ended up picking up a $100 Turkish Mauser instead.

You could find a 9mm pretty cheap. Look on AMMOMAN.COM d/b/a Discount Distributors for some cheap ammo. You can get 1,000 rounds for $239 delivered. I'd say that wouldn't break the bank. You could pick up a Makarov and then check out ammoman. 1,000 rounds of Wolf for $229 or PRVI 1,000 rounds for $299. I'm willing to bet you could buy a Makarov in pretty good condition for less than what either of those deals on the 1,000 rounds would be.

You want cheap? How about a Hipoint?
    Welcome to Hi-Point Firearms!

New 45 are about $170 at Bradis. The 9mm are $140, they also have 380 and 40. All come with a Lifetime warranty, 1st owner or 1000th owner.

I just picked up a 9mm today (for $100) and fired about 30 rounds, no problems.

I'd like to pick up a C9 someday, just for fun. The advantage of a Hi-Point is that regular 9mm ammo is readily available everywhere, including Wal-Mart. 9mm Makarov ammo is usually a gun shop only, or internet order caliber. The East Bloc guns like Makarov and CZ-82 do have the military surplus nostalgia going for them, though.

My idea is cheaper, especially if you have a C&R license.

Yeah, I'm currently reading through all the info on the ATF's site about the 03 FFL. I'm going to get it filled out and start the process to get mine.

I don't see anything on the link:dunno: Can you elaborate please?

I think what he was meaning (not trying to put words in malern's mouth) is that with the C&R license you can purchase C&R guns on your own, many of which are pretty inexpensive, straight from the importer.

I agree Hi-Point is not a bad way to go. I have had my C9 for about 3 years now and have not had any problems with it. Plus the Lifetime warranty is nice to have just in case.

I have seen Nagant revolvers this weekend at the gunstore for $129. I saw one Radom P64 for $159. There are cheap pistols out there, you just have to look around.

Love the Tokarev, cheap to shoot and kick butt power, its a magnum .30 . just do not dry fire ,some have trouble with firing pin breaking,i suspect doing that.

Really cheap ammo would be a 7.62x25 or 5.45x39

The 7.62 would be what the older surplus pistols shoot and the 5.45 would be what AK-74s shoot. You can also find other variants and even AR uppers chambered in 5.45

I used to own a tok in the 7.62 x 25, what a fireball that came out of the end of that barrel. Sold it to a freind some time ago, just did't like the flimsy sites. Nice and slim, in 9mm might be a great CC firearm.

CZ 52, 7.62x25, about 10 cents a round to shoot. Around 1650 fps, large fire ball, recoil between a .357 and .44 mag. Very fun to shoot, and a really cool gun for being made in the early 50s, with it's delayed roller locked breech, similar to a H&K 91/93.
