So I'm finally in the market for a nice semi-auto rifle but I'm looking for something bigger than .22LR that is pretty cheap to shoot.... I'm looking to spend $500 or less..... Worse comes to worse I'll be looking at the rifles in .22LR but I would prefer to have a bigger caliber..... Would be using it for plinking, education on rifles with the wife and kids (all have shot .22LR) Not looking for a rifle that has barely any recoil.... Wanting a bit of a kick to teach them how to re-acquire the target after firing.

Information on the make, model, caliber and price would be great. Thanks :ingo:

I don't know if you have anywhere to shoot it, but you can usually get an SKS rifle for 250-300. Ammo is cheap to, I just bought 10 boxes for 5.99each at Walmart. Plus Brandis has surplus commie ammo, last I bought was around $100 for 325 rounds.

There is not a lot of kick with an SKS, my 125 pound wife handles it just fine.

Big consideration should also be availability of a place to shoot what ever you select. You can shoot a .22 and pistol caliber carbines at most ranges in and around the Indy metro area, but may have to travel some distance to shoot traditional center fire cartridges such as .223, 308, etc.

wasr 10/63 Ak47. Most bang for your buck IMO and ammo can be had for around 150 per 500. Very simple and durable rifle, easy to take apart for cleaning. Also the iron sights on most are very accurate.

Cheaper than that at the 1500, or here... 7.62x39 | SGAmmo.com

Also agree with either AK (WASR) or SKS... Family-wise, a Norinco paratrooper might be a good sized SKS.

If you are wanting to go with a bolt gun, I woud suggest something in a 243. There are several makes and models for under $500. The 243 is an easy gun to shoot and is relitively cheap to shoot. I can take mine out to 400-600 yards. The recoil is mild compared to a 30-06, but is considerable. Not so much as to make kids or recoil shy people afraid of pulling the trigger. I have a Thompson Center Venture with a Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 on top. I have about $700 in this set up. There are several "package" rifles out there, rifles with scopes included, for under $500. If you would like to give mine a run to see what it's like, shoot me a pm and we can work something out.

Just saw your limitation of "semi auto".

    Reguardless, my offer still stands.

Looking for the "black rifle" type also for the "tacticool" factor for the kids.... I have shot the WASR a few times and I think that might be a little to much to handle for the kids and the biggest weapon my wife has fired before is a G22C....

I love the AK so that would get my vote and the ammo isn't too pricey.

Hell with a $500 budget you could get a WASR and a Mosin 91/30 for $500 and have a semi auto and a bolt action to play with that both take cheap ammo! :D

If you were considering a pistol caliber carbine I agree with either the HiPoint 995 or the KelTec Sub2K. Both are fun shooters. I have the Sub2K in .40 and absolutely love it. I have fired a couple HiPoint carbines in 9mm. and they were nice shooters as well.
