No, the homeless can get off their ass and take care of themselves. Everyone wins.

I'm not advocating that tax-dollars be used on them. But it is asinine to block charities from helping people. In many of these people's minds, taking care of themselves is going to equal fishing through your trash. You should move to Sacramento and become a cop.

This affects Indiana how? Are Texas homeless going to start a northward migration to Evansville because the dumpsters are cleaner and contain tastier morsels for their consumption? Or is this just another in a long line of spamming the forum with irrelevent trivia from far away?

How is arresting them going to get them a damn job? Putting them in prison is better than they have it on the streets, plus the taxpayers have to foot the bill. Sometimes arresting everyone isn't the right answer.

    You're totally right.

Only news specifically related to Indiana should be posted under General Political Discussion.

Why don't you arrest him. Or hell, just taze his anarchist butt and be done with it.

Here in downtown indianapolis the homeless are fed more than 8x a day. During the feedings they can pick up their free shoes, north face tents and jackets, as well as pre paid cell phones with 1000 pre paid minutes. Twice a year the homeless can look forward to day spa treatment where they get manicures and pedicures as well as hair cuts and back massages. Those that are on the corner shaking a cup for the most part have arrests up to and including child molestation and murder.

A police officer friend of mine told me of a story (and says this is common) where the police were called for a man who just stole someone's wallet from the mall they locate the man panhandling underneath the arts garden downtown (where he always is) a concerned citizen decides to interject her awesome opinion that they need to leave this poor guy alone since he has done nothing and that he is a veteran according to his sign (which he is not). The officers find the guy's wallet and run the guy over the air. The mom gives her daughter a 5 and tells her to put the 5 in the guys pocket, the cop asks the control operator if the man has any priors then cranks the volume on his radio. "....P.I. several times...burglary...theft...arson...and 2 counts of child molestation." The lady yanked her daughter away and took off down the street.

Indy's homeless population is on the rise not because of job loss, but because the homeless from other cities are catching word about how awesome it is down here. More of our homeless are from gary and chicago than anywhere else including indianapolis.

Businesses located near the bridge near washington and davidson were calling to the police and complaining that after the free food train would roll through, they'd have their cars broken into or buildings broken into. They were sick of helpful citizens feeding the homeless on their property. One group, "food not bombs" who make food for the homeless from donations made several homeless folks sick requiring several ambulances to transport them to wishard for bills that we all paid.

We need to distinguish socialism and charity. It is not wrong to donate to the poor. I am against using tax dollars for it.

some regulation on these operations is needed.. they could be trading work for food, instead of paying a wage.. they could be cooking food in poor conditions, risking public health..
Did they apply for permits & get turned down?

From what I gathered the permit to give food away to homeless people was a couple thousand dollars + all of the food had to be prepared in a licensed commercial kitchen & cooked by licensed chefs or some sort of non-sense.

They certainly don't want the peasants to get comfy on a fancy Church Pew.

Here is my take on homeless people - Some of them are panhandlers, some of them are scary people, some of them are crazy people, and a few of them are decent people who fell on hard times. I don't know about you guys, but I don't like seeing homeless people going through garbage cans like animals or begging on a corner for cash with their little kids holding up a sign. It doesn't make me feel good. So, I think it's great that some couple or some church will take these people in. It's a win-win, some people get to feel good about helping other people, some people feel good being helped, and I feel good for not having to see trash digging in the United States, so it looks like it's actually the famous Mr. Scott's Win-Win-Win!!!

It's better than them eating out of dumpsters.

My response was somewhat tongue in cheek. If these people want to waste their time feeding lots of drunks, lots of drug addicts and a few good folks down on their luck....more power to them.

I will say that the ones that don't deserve the help are only enabled by their charity. And that's a shame. There is no reason to put forth any effort to "help yourself" when the world is full of suckers who will care for those that aren't deserving.

I do feel their efforts would be better served through churches or shelters rather than feeding them in public parks.

I'm also a skeptic when it comes to "not for profit" agencies. Generally the heads of these knock down serious cash...but that may or may not be the case here. So I wouldn't know if that's their motivation...or if they are actually sincere in their efforts.

Anyhow, .gov should butt out. But I do see the need for making sure someone's not feeding these people a bowl of stew enriched with Drano or cockroach protien. But we all know that's probably not big brother's motivation, either. :twocents:
