I'm currently building an AR15 and I've found a clamp on front sight tower instead of the traditional pin on front sight tower. I am building an A2 style rifle with a 20" barrel with a fixed butt-stock.
I have used several Armalite clamp on A2 front sight bases. The clamps on sight bases are very secure and they allow the sights to be zeroed out for windage. These sights work best for those who do not have the skills and equipment to pin a sight or are unwilling to pay to have it done.
The Armalite base is for a rifle length gas system so a taller front sight post is needed for a shorter gas system.
If it's just a range gun, a clamp-on is going to be fine. If it's a gun that's going to get banged around/duty gun, I would want the pinned barrel. I'd be afraid of a clamp on rotating if the top of the sight tower got smacked hard enough. If it was only a fun gun, I wouldn't worry about it.
ADCO will drill and install a front sight for $90 for you. $105 if you want taper pins.
