classified forest tax break

Have several acres of timber, was wondering what kind of tax break you get if allowed use, dnr classified forest program.

The highlights are that CF will be taxed at an assessed rate of $1 per acre.

Read the link for all the details. If you own significant land it's a good deal generally unless you plan on stripping the timber.

Read several of the files do you actually have to manage( ex: cut undergrowth or odd trees) for better forest, or is it mainly a paper report and inspection every 5 yrs

Depends on the DF, but you don't actually have to do anything personally. A management plan is a pretty simple thing if all you want to do is leave it alone. They are extremely flexible.

My parents have their 40 acres of woods we hunt on in classified forest, have for several years now.
The forester comes out and meets with dad every few years and helps him go through the woods and see what needs done, as dad's goal is to log it in the next 10 years or so, so the forester has advised us to go through at least once a year cutting out grapevines that slow tree growth.
The forester will also help find a reputable logging company for your intended purpose (in our case, hunting property) to make sure it's logged the way you need it.
Also, if you ever plan on adding a permanent structure, all you have to do is take the land it sits on (1/2 acre or so) out of protected forest and pay back taxes on just that segment.
My dad says so far it has completely been worth it, for the help with management and guidance towards logging and all.
It's a great program!
