Is the mag lock fully engaged into the new mag. Is the slot located in the same place as the original. RIA not the tightest spec piece. Is there another gun you can try it in.

Lock the slide back and see if it seats. The tension might be too much in the spring while loaded. Could be the mag catch, but I doubt it with an RIA. It takes extra effort to seat an 8rd mag with the slide "closed" in my experiences with 1911's.

I never thought of locking the slide back first. Good call. I don't really think its the mag catch because the act 8 rnd mag locks good... But it also doesn't sit flush. It has a bigger base

so with the slide locked back the full 8 rounds locks up great. As soon as I release it. It chambers one and drops the mag

Same with round number 7. I chambered round number six and the 5rnd mag stayed locked.

Potentially the mag catch spring may need replaced. Is it ONLY doing this with the "colt" magazine?

Have you tried wilson's or chip mccormicks?

The reason I ask is because there are numerous "colt" mag counterfeits.
