Looking into my crystal ball, I bet that tech dies on the vine due to lack of interest UNLESS the Feds tie some highway fund grant money to it somehow or other.

I think writing tickets for texting while driving would do far, far, more good for public safety than writing tickets for speeding - and it would give the cops a chance to raise revenue and conduct random inspections just like the speed limit laws do.

While I agree texting and driving is a bad combo, radar and text detection probably won't work. Too many what ifs for me to see this working. What if??? passengers texting, voice to text hands free, text is being received but ignored, adjacent car occupants, pedestrians, automated messaging, the list goes on.

Definitely, too many what ifs and possibilities to detect numerous nearbys for this to be accurate enough to use. If they try it I see the potential for some serious legal wrangling here.

As a school bus driver, the biggest threat on the road that I have encountered is people playing with their cell phones instead of driving. Of course this includes numerous police I've caught doing the exact same thing.

Cops should be out in force to stop texting and driving over anything else. But it needs to start with police learning how to operate a motor vehicle within the boundaries of the law. The majority I see out on the road have no regard for speed limits, legal turns, nor signaling. I caught one yesterday signaling a right turn while turning left, his gas cap hanging out, and speeding a good 15-20mph over the speed limit without lights on. He blew right by a truck that was swerving all over the road, literally flying off into the grass at times. I see stuff this bad or worse on a daily basis from police.

First of all, eliminate the phrase texting while driving. It's much more than texting. These morons are on Facebook, playing Candy Crush, watching porn. Just making a call with a smartphone require several steps to unlock phone, get into contacts, select call, etc.

Back to the original topic, I see a lot of issues with the technology, some stated above.

And don't law enforcement entities already use odor detection devices to identify things like pot growing operations? They can analyze the scent signature or something.

I think that's a real thing... or am I just :tinfoil:

What if you have kids/passengers? Can it pinpoint the driver?? Sounds like a waste of technology to me.

You telling me people are literally that addicted that they can't shut off their phone for a simple car ride?

Someone should get them to a psychologist, because they need serious help.

The kids and passengers aren't behaving at all oddly if they elect to use their phones during a car ride. I have the kindle on mine, which I use to read just as if I had the paper book in front of me when I'm not driving.

Amen to that! At least with my old flip phone, I could keep both eyes on the road, one hand on the wheel and dial a number (most likely literally "a" number because of speed dial) by touch. With the smart phone? No way. And forget texting. I have a hard enough time sending a text sitting perfectly still in a chair and concentrating JUST on sending the text. Do the fingers of people that text all the time eventually develop into tiny little pointy appendages? I've got small hands, and my finger tips easily cover 2 or 3 letters on the "keyboard".

Guys there is this thing called blue tooth and text to speech.

I don't even have to touch my phone to send a text message in my car.

This law was irrelevant before it was even passed.

How about detecting if the po-po is playing on their laptops while moving? Nah, wouldn't happen.
Or using our radios while driving. We should just turn them off while in the car so they do not distract us. I talk on my radio ALL THE TIME while driving...OH NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
