You are on the right track for a good coyote gun. I live in the Texas panhandle where coyotes are prolific and quite a nuisance when raising cattle especially at calving time in the spring. I have several .223's and 22.250's but I have to say my favorite of them all is a gun I bought for my son last Christmas. It is a Weatherby Vanguard varmint special in 22.250 caliber, I bought it for 450.00 dollars used at a gun shop and we put a decent 6 X 18 scope on it for around 150.00 dollars and it is a pooch (coyote) killin machine. Weatherby guarantees the accuracy of these guns to I believe a 2 inch grouping at 100 yds after bore sighting. I could be wrong on 2 inches I can't remember but they do guarantee them to shoot well or they will replace the gun. You will also enjoy this gun for prairie dogs, especially in the spring when they are dumb to the noise. All in all this 250 is a very well rounded gun for varmints and it will drive tacks at 200 yds.

For coyotes, I would say anything between a 243 to a 308. The AR-10 are awesome guns. Put a NVG scope on top and you will not be disappointed.

Yea, I like the thought of a 22-250, but the .223 seems to be cheaper to shoot. I have some extra cash, but I dont want to take away from the table. I am still looking and pondering. Keep the replies coming. Im hoping I can find something used for now.

What about the Bushmaster O.R.C.© (Optics Ready Carbine) .223? It is for a Law Enforcement Model, but on sale at Dunhams right now for $799. Is that a very accurate gun? I see they make varmit or hunting rifles, but are much more $$$$ and not on sale.

AR's really shine when you call in a double- the other 90% of the time a single, well placed shot is all that's needed. On a budget, I'd suggest a Handi-Rifle in .223. I've killed about as many with mine as I have my AR- and WAY more crows.

Remington used to make a budget version of the 700 in .22-250. I want to say it's a 775? Not sure if they still make it though. I've got one but don't shoot it much or know much about it but it's a great gun when I do shoot it.

    Hello all,
I am wanting to get into coyote hunting and maybe some light target shooting. I am looking for a .223 of some sort. I would really like a semi auto. But I dont want to break the bank, budget is key. What do you all think and from where? Thanks.

Not sure why you need a semi auto for coyote hunting, unless you're unsure of your ability...most cases you just need a good bolt action. That being said, a Savage Model 25 is the ticket you need in a great coyote rifle:twocents:

I agree with the Savage Axis/Edge bolt action in .223 or .243, for around $300 or lower new.

There are also the CZ 527 bolt actions in .223 and 7.62x39 for around $500 to $600 used/new. There have been great reports on the 7.62x39 CZ 527's reliabilty and accuracy, even with the cheaper European steel and surplus ammos.

    Good luck.

I went to Dunhams today. They have the Bushmaster still onsale and it comes with a $!00 gift card to the store. So it is actually about $699. I think that is a good price huh?

i second a vote for a savage bolt rifle in 22-250cal. after coyote hunting go out west for a prairie dog hunt. where i live i would feel much safer using a 12guage shotgun for thick cover hunting.

Without a doubt i would go with a Henry .357 magnum lever action. This gun is great for everything and is very fun to shoot.

Up to what you want and the $$$. I run with a .204 Ruger in a Ruger M77 bolt gun and love it. Have dropped several with it and only lost one wounded (300- yard shot, my bad on the hit) A semi auto would be nice. AR platform, depends on money I guess.
22-250, 223, 204, ..... just look for the deal and dont get a heavy barrel gun that will weigh you down when tramping all over the countryside doing sets.

Savage bolt gun, T/C encore single shot. Stevens combo gun with scope and rings included. Lots of bolts guns not so many semi-automatics in price range. Good luck
