He is correct, but this is nothing new. I think I posted this before on INGO, so all he's doing is replicating research I did a while back. Maybe he copied it from me!

    Code:
    Rate/100,000	2003	2004	2005	2006	2007	2008	2009

    USA 739.8	729.2	726.2	733.2	723.6	730.7	714.7
    England/Wales	1,553.3	1,282.4	1,207.6	1,157.8	1,079.2	1,068.0	986.4
    Scotland	726.6	688.4	614.7	597.6	494.6	493.3	457.7

    Data

Now homicides, yes, we are 4x higher than England (1.2 England v. 5 for US). But you are talking a couple of points per hundred thousand people. Compare that to physical assault resulting in serious bodily injury: 262 for US v. 730 for England or 1,487 for Scotland!

It is true that we have a high murder rate, mostly of criminals killing criminals. Also, our murder rate is high largely due to the multicultural nature of our society. Blacks have a vastly higher criminal and victim homicide rate than our society as an average:

Homicide Offender Rate/100,000 by Race in US:

    • 3.4 – White
    • 25.8 – Black
    • 3.2 – Other
If you took blacks out of the equation, we'd be on par with Germany and lower than France.

Oh yeah, two things I didn't mention above:

    1) due to an error it was determined that the UK actually under-reported their stats
    2) a number of years ago the UK stopped taking reports on minor assaults. To conserve the resources of the inundated criminal justice system, English police no longer investigate burglary and “minor assaults.” As of 2006, if the police catch a mugger, robber, or burglar, or other “minor” criminal in the act, the policy is to release them with a warning rather than to arrest and prosecute them.

Straight from the FBI. Higher population, more guns (almost 1 to 1 ratio), and less violent crime and murder/ non negligent manslaughter. Check out the trend over the last 20 years. Bring this up next time someone tries to tell you that we are less safe of a society because of guns.

I'm from England and it most certainly is a myth that it's crime free. Anything not bolted down, locked up or otherwise secured is fair game for the criminally minded. Being beaten to a pulp just because someone is frustrated at their lot in life is also common. Don't try to defend yourself or your loved one's or you'll end up behind bars. Don't bother calling the cops either. They are so thin on the ground that they're not likely to show up for an hour or so, if at all. In fact, there are so few police boots on the ground, that the country has in excess of 3 MILLION cameras watching your every move. George Orwell got it right.
