I will soon be purchasing a CZ 550 varmit kevlar .308. My question is would you lose anything by shortening the barrel to 18"-20" ? I'm not looking for a 800 yard rifle more of a under 400 yard / hunting rifle. Any comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Being as by shooting 308 Win you are already well behind the curve, you'd lose nothing you've not already lost.

Roughly 200 fps, going from 26" to 18".

I would shorten it also. Like others said you wont lose much besides a few fps and huge barrel. The positives outway the negatives in my book any day.'I bet that it will shoot good.

I'd go to 20" as well. I have a Remy 700 PSS 308 with 26" and an SPS with a 20" tube and I can't tell much difference in accuracy. I'm not an operator though so a better shot might be able to tell a difference. ;) I love my 527 Target/Varmint in 223.

No problems at all at 400 yds. I have a Savage 10 PC in .308 that has a 20" barrel. It's about a 36" drop at 400 yards with a 100 yard zero (168gr FGMM).
