The .458 shoots a real rifle bullet the .450 shoots a pistol bullet. I'd go with the the SOCOM but they will both work for most situations.

Thanks guys did a little research on the 458 Socom with a 300 grain bullet shhots dead on at 100 yards anddrops 13 1/2 inches at 200 so thats not very good my Encore muzzle loader shots better than that 2ell looks like its going to be a 450 Bushmaster if I can find an upper or my Encore. Thanks again

While this wasn't mentioned if I would still be here (getting transfered) I was going to get either a TC Pro hunter or Ruger #1 in 460 S&W. Yes the rounds are sort of pricy but after your initial set up you should be good to go. I'm AR 15'd out from work so using the AR 15 just isn't my thing on hunting (personally don't care what anyone else uses) I just like the lines of the Ruger #1.

If you compare the same bullet from both cartridges is trajectory really that different?:dunno:

I went with the 458 because I reload, it gives you more bullet options, and it uses standard mags that I already have.

I seen 458 socom ammo at several vendors at the 1500 at $40 for 20rds.

If you are buying a barrel for your Encore, then there are much better choices than a .458 Socom or .450 bushmaster. Those are fine for an AR platform, but you can take advantage of better cartridges with the Encore.

    .358 WSM 1.8"

    .357 Herrett

    exiting stage left!
I like the 458, when I purchased it the 450 was not in the spectrum yet. Yes the ammo and the upper is more expensive, but the knock down poor is impressive. I have killed 2 deer a year since I bought it and have only had to track one. It was my fault for poor shot placement, but the deer only made it 100 yards. The rest did acrobatics for about 10 yards. If I had it to do all over again, I would stick with the socom.

I was going to go with the 460 S&W but I was having a hard time finding a barrel for my Encore. Most the ones I found was $325 plus tax & shipping. Right now most places do not have them in stock for that matter no one has the 450 Bushmaster in stock either.
