I'm going to be looking for a good deer hunting shotgun at the next Indy1500. Would like to solicit recommendations on what to look for?

I'd look for an 870 or mossy 500 with a rifled barrel. The 870 would be quieter as the mossies tend to clank and rattle in my experience.

Mossberg 500 in 20 or 12 gauge, I have one of each and you could pick one up for $350 and under depending on condition, I have a 20 gauge with a rifled barrel and it is a nail driver with hornaday sst slugs.

Savage 220. It's by far the most accurate slug gun I've messed with, and I've messed with nearly all of them.

    +1

Savage 220 is crazy accurate for a shotgun. My son has dropped 2 great bucks with his. Both were around 100 yards.

I enjoy my h&r ultra slug hunter, but it is a dedicated slug gun. I find it plenty accurate for my needs, and it wasnt ridiculously expensive. If i recall correctly it was about $280.

Cool! Thanks! Bought a Savage rifle for my son two years ago, and been very happy with it.

I tested one when they first came out. At 110 yds I shot a 5 shot group and the 1 hole was maybe 1.5 inches in diameter. I have no plans to go back to slug hunting, but if I ever did I would bother shoping around and reading reviews, I would grab a 220 in 1/2 a heartbeat.

Now I want a savage 220........ Normally I bow hunt but my Remington 870 has served me well. I do agree that the accuracy is tied to the slug quality.

Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel and Hornady SST Slugs. I can't say enough good things about the SST's. Last year my dad and I had hunted all morning with no luck, so we came back that evening to re-hang our stands for the next day. As we were walking in I had my mossy and I looked up and there were two does right there. The first one I shot was a gut shot (shooter error) and she only went 50 yards before dropping. The second one hit one lung, hit the spine, the spine deflected the slug down and hit the heart and she dropped right where she was. Hope that helps.

i have recently bought a mossy 500 just like my fathers, but my ole faithful is a westernfield 20 guage, bolt action. havent had a 870 so i cant tell you anything bout them. i have hunted with a mossy and its a great gun. but id start off with a cheaper bolt action first. personal preference.....

I would recommend you at least check out CVA's new Scout in 12ga. They are balanced, light, easy to shoulder, and light on the wallet. IMO they lockup tighter and feel better made than the handi & ultra slug hunter alternatives of the single shot variety. I picked my stainless up for under $300, which includes the scope mount. Topped it with a 1-4 Leupold and it shoots Hornady SST's at 2-3moa.

this photo shows it wearing a 3-9 vortex which has been removed in favor of the leupold.

I have a Remingtong 870 Youth Express Magnum 20 Gauge that is a very accurate and easy handling gun.

I also use a Winchester 1300 pump with smooth bore slug barrel and a Winchester1400 semi auto with smooth bore slug barrel both are great shooters and can be found for decent prices
