When I was in high school, our civics class (I don't think they have those anymore) discussed what it would take to lose liberty in the US. Most of my classmates said it couldn't happen because of the constitution (in my naivety I was in this group) , the rest said invasion by some superior force. Heh, no one ever thought it'd be democracy itself, the tyranny of the majority.

I always thought a good requirement for getting a high-school diploma would be having to describe the difference between a democracy and a constitutional republic, or between free-market capitalism, and crony-capitalist/socialist economics.
