I cut 1/4 inch off one tip/side of a clothes pin.
Glue it either at the top of a 3/4 inch dowel or 6 inches apart on a 2x4.
I did tap in a small finishing nail into the dowel just incase glue breaks...
Set up your target, set in the clay and shoot away.
    .97 per dowel
.99 per 50 pack of clothes pins
    .99 craft glue
free scrap wood is somewhere in your garage!
I figure time w family, friends, or kids is always made better with low cost breakable (instant gratification) targets.

Very cool. Is the following worth it...

    Rip 1" off the 2x4

    Cut this into 4 x 2' pieces

Use these to put legs on each end, attaching with a carriage bolt and washers.

this should allow the legs to be folded parallel when not in use and, with 2' of height, you could make a top and bottom row.

Another option for the back of your setup. Cut a piece of cardboard, about 8 inches wide, 24 inches long. Secure the cardboard to the back of the 2x4. Clip clothes pins to the cardboard. Shoot the clothes pins off. You can shoot the clays, and the clothespins.

I like your idea. I will most certainly copy it.
