You can ask questions about pretty much anything but wait until you get to 50 posts to ask about buying a gun and even then use the classifieds. Once you get to know folks and they know you open conversation happens about this.

This. . .. is perceived by many as a "cheat" to get around the 50 post requirement or support for the site. I think you'll be ok once you get the hang of the place.
