Oh, I almost forgot. Make sure you have the means to fell trees and turn them into firewood manually, without fuel. Great for heat, cooking, light, etc...and in case I didn't mention it, FIRST AID supplies and skills as well as learning what remedies can be found in nature for various maladies. Medical skills of this nature alone can guarantee you everything you will ever need from those that don't have them. Oh yeah, oil lamps/lanterns are really good to have as well as antibiotics and the ability to make soap from stuff like ashes and cooking grease....Learn how to harvest game with traps, snares, bow, slingshot, etc. Whatever doesn't make noise......and on and on...

Speaking of lighting, I was thinking about those solar lights that line a walk way. My dad has a few. You could charge them during the day, then bring them in at night.

Two things that aren't mentioned very often are toilet paper and seasonings/sauces for food. Most people cannot imagine their life without the convenience of toilet paper, and in addition to flavoring food, some spices (cayenne or chili pepper) are excellent in curing strep or sore throats.

GREAT idea! You can also use the solar panels from them to charge a cell phone or just about anything else. KipKay has a video about it as well as many others on youtube.

I think I saw that one. Is that where he puts the solar panels inside a plastic baseball card sheet and wires them into a USB cable?

I'm glad you reminded me of that. I wanna try it and forgot. I travel this week so good project for boredom in the hotel.

I have heard of people putting together a barter package. You can include things such as book matches, bandaids, cheap pocket knives, pencil & notepad, string/twine, safety pins, needle & thread, brown jersey gloves, etc. You can use a freezer zip lock bag to put everything in. Just a thought.

Yep, get a paint can, or small bucket full of sand, or pea gravel, stick the light in, set it outside during the day, and bring it in at night for a handy lamp.

Classics porno mags. I'm serious. This is the one thing that preppers will forget to include, because they think they can just download everything from the internet, forgetting that there will be no internet and no electricity. You can't even fire up your computer to look at that special folder even if you have a generator, because you have to conserve power, and because your wife will catch you red handed. After about a week or so, these well-stocked guys will start feeling a bit lonely, and that's why you offer to trade the December issue for some ammo or food.

South Park has an episode with a similar premise.

One thing I'm picking up every time I go to walmart is canning lids. I'd hate to trade someone ammo, for them to use it against me.I'd rather trade food or clothing.

    Bic® lighters, and others.

Local tobacco shop sells all kinds of lighters, and several of them can be re-loaded, unlike Bic®. A case of Ronson© gas cartridges might not be a bad idea.

... very many calls in or out via your cell phones, I think. CB and 2, 10, & 20 meter bands might work for Hams.
the gps functions and mp3 player as well as anything else like first aid/survival manuals, other pdfs, maps, etc may still prove useful though. Even a radio or flashlight can be charged this way....not intended to be meant for calling.
