i was thinking about duracoat on my all steel 45cal baby eagle. the lettering and numbers on the gun look shallow to me and i was wondering if the duracoat would fill them in to the point they cant be read?

You should be fine. I duracoated a few things and didnt have any problem with it filling in any lettering. The duracoat is applied in very thin layers. So far it seems very durable also.

How are you going to apply the duracoat? If you're using an air brush you should be fine, but if you're going to use a kit, then you may want to be extra careful. I recently used one of the duracoat kits to coat a ruger mark iii and the serial number on it is very lightly engraved. I held the sprayer too close and covered up nearly all indication of a serial number there. Later, I had to scratch it off with a knife blade so that I don't get in trouble with the law. This was one of my first time playing with duracoat and it geniunely was a rookie mistake.

Just be careful and you shouldn't have any problems.

    Use their cleaner!

Don't take shortcuts and use the Trustrip cleaner from Duracoat. Surface prep is everything in getting good results. Over 45 projects so far with absolutely no problems. Use a good quality air brush and don't spray in temp below 60 F.

I also found that using their reducer helped improve the quality of the finish I get with my airbrush. My first attemp was on an Argentinian Hi Power and I sprayed the finish uncut with any reducer and it had a definite orange peel to it. A couple of drops of reducer thinned it enough to make is go on very smooth. I've done 5 guns now and have had great luck. It's good stuff.

Just talking about all of this again is making me want to duracoat my 870. The finish is starting to wear on it anyway.

Where are you? I need an excuse to get back at it. If you'll disassemble and reassemble we might be able to do some good.

One of my early attempts w/homemade stencils.

All of the CZs that have silver on them in this photo have been duracoated.

I still don't have a decent photo of the Hi Power.

For the Hi Power, I took it completly down to the last spring and pin. For the CZs, I took them 90% down. Here is one of the CZs before being sprayed:

If you use the kit. Keep the can no less then 6" from the surface. Make thin quick passes to keep the paint from running or going on to thick.
