A burglary suspect is in the hospital this morning after an Indianapolis homeowner beat him and shot him as he tried to break into an Eastside home.
Donald Robertson, 53, woke to the sound of glass breaking at his home in the 4600 block of East 30th Street at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday, according to police reports.
Robertson grabbed his shotgun and went outside to investigate when he found a man trying to break into a window. Robertson confronted the suspect, police said. The suspect charged, police said, and Robertson fired the shotgun, not sure if the pellets hit or missed.
The men struggled and Robertson struck the suspect several times with the butt of the shotgun until it broke, police said.
The suspect continued to fight and Robertson fired the shotgun twice more, police said. The suspect fled to a back yard two blocks west, where that homeowner called police.
Police arrested Chester Burkett, 43, for attempted burglary, residential entry and attempted theft on Thursday. Burkett was held this morning in a secure detention unit at Wishard Memorial Hospital, where police said he was treated for a shotgun wound to his left thigh and several cuts to his head. Robertson was treated at the scene for a cut to his thumb, police said.
