Wouldn't it be more the magazine spring pushing it then the gun pulling it? Without that spring, that round isn't really going anywhere.

Just because something can be removed from the gun, does not mean it's not required for proper operation.

I could argue that I could take the slide off of your gun and that it would, at that point, cease to function but it's not really relevant.

No spring in the magazine, or no magazine - FTF. No slide on the gun - failure to do a lot of things [including, but not limited to FTF]. Point is - that it's not only the spring or only the magazine that makes it feed the round. The gun is the sum of all of it's parts.
