    XDM 9mm 4.5 in original case with all the factory goodies +1 additional mag.
    Appx 500 rounds through it

    for a

    pre-2000s Marlin 1894 44mag with Ballard type rifling.

    The current Marlin production is shoddy and limited. The older Marlins should go up in value. A plastic pistol will not.

    I'd say it's a good trade if you like the caliber.

    You can always find a modern pistol like an XD. Your good older Marlins are out there too. Just not as many are put up for sale.

    If the Marlin is tight and shipshape, I'd trade. Nothing wrong with an XD, either.

    Again, it depends on your wants or needs at this moment.

    .44 mag ammo is expensive. 9mm plinking ammo seems to have gone the way of the Dodo.
