So I'm in the far right turn lane at a busy 6 lane intersection. I'm stopped behind another driver. The light turns green, he proceeds to turn right, I follow, steal a quick glance to the left to insure I'm not pulling out in front of any lunatics when bam! I smack into the back of this guy who has decided to abruptly and fully stop in the intersection. I' m slightly disoriented by the impact, trying to make sure the ten cars behind me haven't piled up, watching the guy wander around in the busy intersection examining damage to his vehicle (probably $2K+ -- some tow hooks on front of my truck impaled his bumper, then my bumper crushed his trunk in). I'm surprised he doesn't come ask if I'm ok (not entirely, seatbelt jarred me pretty good). State Police car escorts of to a nearby parking lot. Guy finally approaches and I'm apologetic, he's unperturbed, says he became confused by all the arrows and stopped.

Glad it wasn't a big deal, scary how fast things can happen.

I did that to a buddy's truck one day, a long time ago. I didn't hit him nearly as it sounds like you did and it hurt my car a lot more than his...but yes, assuming the guy in front of you kept going is not a safe assumption. Just be glad nobody got hurt.
