short on money = dont buy german.

for a few grand, i would look at older hondas - you can find some late 90's civics (maybe an early 00's with bunches of miles) for about that.

i have had good luck with private sellers, although being a mechanic and knowing exactly what i am looking for in those vehicles.

find a few in your price range, do some google-fu to see what you shoudl be looking for on THAT vehicle, and go from there. i try not to buy from dealers for used cars - only a 30 day warranty, anyway!
