They don't hand out F-16s to everybody who signs up. There is a very strict method to qualify first as a pilot and then rate high enough to qualify for the single engine fighter. Even if they qualify, there is a rigorous training program in the F-16 before they are certified. So as a pilot she has to be good.

Being a good pilot and being able to work with people are two different things. There has to be more to this than they are telling.

I think you're missing the point.

More conservative types are supposed to get aggravated because she only got this slot because she is a she and because of her looks and women shouldn't be doing this sort of thing anyway.

More liberal types are supposed to get aggravated because they never gave the woman a chance, undermined her, and immediately rejected her to put a male in the position to perpetuate the patriarchy.

Tossing out some explanation that could just as easily apply to both men and women in any context where high skill and excellent leadership skills are required deprives both sides of the opportunity to get angry. We can't have that.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_Hultgreen

Kara Spears Hultgreen (5 October 1965 – 25 October 1994) was a lieutenant and naval aviator in the United States Navy and the first female carrier-based fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy. She died just months after she was certified for combat, when she crashed her F-14 Tomcat into the sea on final approach to USS Abraham Lincoln.

    Death
On 25 October 1994, Hultgreen died when her F-14A-95-GR, BuNo 160390, coded "NH 103," crashed on approach to USS Abraham Lincoln. The incident occurred off the coast of San Diego after a routine training mission. Finding herself overshooting the landing area centerline, Hultgreen attempted to correct her approach by applying left rudder pedal, which caused the nose to disrupt the airflow over the left (inside) wing, as well as the airflow to the left engine intake. The port engine suffered a compressor stall and lost power—a well-known deficiency characteristic of the F-14A's TF30-P-414A engine when inlet air was no longer flowing straight into it. For this reason, the F-14 NATOPS flight manual warned against excess yaw. Loss of an F-14 engine results in asymmetric thrust, which can exceed rudder authority, especially at low speeds.

After aborting the approach, Hultgreen selected full afterburner on the remaining engine, causing an even greater asymmetry. This, combined with a high angle of attack, caused an unrecoverable approach turn stall and rapid wing drop to the left. The radar intercept officer in the rear seat, Lt. Matthew Klemish, initiated ejection for himself and Hultgreen as soon as it was apparent the aircraft was becoming uncontrollable. First in the automated ejection sequence, the RIO survived. However, by the time Hultgreen's seat fired 0.4 seconds later, the plane had exceeded 90 degrees of roll, and she was ejected downward into the water, killing her.

    Controversy
Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness, a group that seeks to limit the roles of women in the military, suggested that Hultgreen "may have been the victim of a flawed policy," a policy that overlooked her mistakes in training, two of which were similar to those that caused her death. The other pilot named by the center subsequently brought a suit for defamation against the CMR but lost because the court determined that, by virtue of her status as one of the first women to attempt to qualify as a carrier combat pilot, she was a "public figure" and had to prove malice on the part of those who published the charge of favoritism. She appealed but her appeal was denied with a statement that "Our conclusion about Lt. Lohrenz’s public figure status does not suggest that she was not a good Naval aviator trying to do her job, and it does not penalize her for acting with ‘professionalism.’"

An Accuracy in Media reports others quoting CDR Tom Sobiek, commanding officer of Fighter Squadron VF-124, as saying of the four female pilots in his squadron, "The women are going to graduate regardless of how they performed" and that "the Navy was in a race with the Air Force to get the first female fighter pilot". It quotes Sobiek denying making any such statement. "That is a flat **** lie," he said. "And whoever told you that, if they were under oath, should be taken to task.

Yeah, because pushing people to be the first anything for political reasons is never actually true and never gets anyone killed at the sharp end. People never lie about it, either

When I was at OCS EVERY leadership position was held by a female...it took almost every female there to to it. I'm sure it was merit based. Though Miss Montana did have some seriously qualifying peaks.

As a highly conservative individual, having nearly 23 years as a USAF officer, my first supervisor having been a very sharp, technically savvy female, and having had a number of other female superiors, subordinates, and peers... some very very good, some...not... most on par...

It is unlikely that she got to be a 1,000 hour F-16 pilot merely through good looks. If nothing else the plane will kill you if you aren't pretty good, and for a position where one e is demonstrating the technical virtuosity of the airplane, it is unlikely ACC chose the lowest skilled pilot available.

That doesn't mean the USAF is immune to political and image pressures. This is a single-plane demonstration team, it is meant to be seen by the public as a positive model, and when you have one (1) pilot, everyone is going to be looking at that pilot for all kinds of reasons. In an age where "identity" especially certain "identities" are way more equal than others, … given a minimum baseline of technical skills, some identities might be more advantageous for PR purposes than others. There might be non-competency hidden faults that are not talked about and don't come to light because if you complain, you are a bigot. Kinda like if everyone ignores certain actionsthe and comments until the individual shoots a bunch of fellow soldiers.

From the evidence available you can't determine that she was selected to be the Viper team pilot because she is an attractive woman, but you can't just sniff about unreconstructed conservatives and rule it out either. Not fair to her maybe, but there are women who work hard, there are women who use all advantages to play the game, and an institutional effort to push women forward still exists...(here comes the conservative part)...long after it has served its purpose.

Whatever happened to get her removed must have been pretty substantial, but it doesn't sound like it was flying competence. nor something criminal, like a DUI or something of that nature. The fact that Wing Commander said he hopes she stays in service, giving her opportunity to learn, etc, speaks against that. Something that was a judgment issue. That covers a pretty wide field. Might have even pre-dated her appointment but just now come to the knowledge of higher ups.

When you go stand in the spotlight, a lot of things that would not normally be seen get revealed.

    Not today, ISIS

There is a difference between "a few weeks after" and "1000 hour pilot."

Anyone can make mistakes but in a job that you actually regularly perform duties that'll kill you when done wrong, it tends to be a little sooner that you get got.

Plus it seems you're trying to make this about gender (although I may need to re-read that post), so..

    Naked pictures.

There's got to be naked pictures.

You dont get 27k followers just by existing, or posting mundane food pics, etc.

My money is on too many "unprofessional" photos in that account and the brass found out.

Oh, and you dont just up and delete an account that popular at the same time you are removed from your job if there isnt a reason. Kinda wonder if the account was deleted, thinking she could keep her job, and immediately afterward was told "Nope. Too late. cows, barn doors, and all that jazz."

    Wow. I had no idea.

Yeah, I was at work that day. We had the only military radar coverage of the northern Midwest (because NORAD was previously only interested in looking out from the coasts) and scrambled more than a few unarmed fighters against unknowns still in the air. It was...interesting...
