So I'm planning on shooting my first USPSA match later this month, and I have a couple of questions.
I joined the USPSA, and I am wanting to get classified, but I'm not sure which class I should shoot. I am shooting a .40 Witness-P and I am wondering whether to shoot Production or Limited-10. If I read the rules correctly, I must de-cock in Production, but not Limited. The Witness is capable of Condition 1, and I would prefer shooting that way, but would I be at a big disadvantage in Limited for very little gain?
Also, I just started reloading and I don't have a chronograph, so I am going to use factory ammo to be on the safe side. That being said, I am looking at WWB, 165 fmj. Winchester claims 1060 fps on their web site, is this fairly consistent? I would like to make major.

    Thanks for all the help.

Don't worry about making major for local matches (there is no chronograph stage at local matches). If you are planing to use factory ammo or reloads that you think will make major, I would shoot limited or limited-10 (depending on magazine capacity) and declare major.

If you want to shoot your reloads at minor power factor and are comfortable manually decocking I would shoot production.

Witnesses can be competitive in both divisions. If you want to shoot limited, Henning makes extended base pads and other parts that would make the gun more competitive.

Henning's Shop : EAA Witness Parts, EAA Parts, Tanfoglio Parts, Ghost Holster, EGW Hammer Sear, Wolff Springs, Henning Pads, Safariland 771, Alu Grips, Scope Mounts

If you are going to a club match, there is no chronograph. Your reloads should be fine.

I am not familiar with the Witness P. You will be fine in either production or limited 10. Do you have 15+1 mags? Production and L-10 require more mag changes.

Limited may be an option. Depends on how many long courses there are.

You can get all your classifiers in at Riley Conservation Club on 9/19/10.

I know you have been to ACT League classes. Sorry, didn't recognize the screen name for a second.

Max Bedwell is also having a course on 10/9/10 at South Central. I don't have the details handy for that class.

Welcome aboard. It becomes an addiction after awhile.

downrange 72, I am planning on Riley being my first match. The Witness-P is the polymer version, mine is the older small frame with 10 rd magazines (one 12 rd). Which is the better class to get my feet wet, L-10 or production, or does it really matter?

You'll score a little higher in L10 because you're shooting a .40, but you will be competing against higher end guns.

I'd shoot in Production, it'll be mostly against other Polymer guns and be pretty equal.

These are the Witness guns on the Production approved list:

Witness Elite Stock (33 oz.), Witness P Carry (27 oz.), Witness Polymer (30 oz.), Witness Polymer compact (27 oz.), Witness Steel (33 oz.), Witness Steel compact (30 oz.)

(Witness Carry Comp, Gold, Silver and Limited versions are not approved)

Where will you compete after you complete in the classifiers? I'm also in Bloomington, new gun owner and am very competitive. I just picked up autocross and am looking for a good way to increase my firearms skills.

Does anyone have a good website to read up on how to get into idpa or uspsa?

this is a great place to start and you are in a good location, having at least 3 USPSA clubs within decent driving distance of you.

You will find tons of info in this section of the forum, as the question gets asked a lot.

What kind of handgun would you be thinking about shooting?

(Stock Custom model is NOT approved for Production Division)

For some reason, USPSA lists EAA, Witness, and Tangfoglio under different categories.

In this case, I'd probably play in production first. Usually limited 10 guys have some high speed guns. Production you will be up against all of the "normal" production guns, that may or may have been tweeked

I'd be shooting an XDM 9mm.

XDM in 9mm you will want to shoot production

Witness in 40s&w you will want to shoot L10 and shoot major.

Don't worry about who you are shooting against, you are just starting, what you want to do is go and shoot at your own pace and speed that will get you two Alpha's on each target.
