"This morning I heard water running in the basement..."

    I'll bet you did.
Took about 20 minutes to get it apart and replaced.
I've got galvanized pipes for my water I know I need to replace.

To lazy to do it and to cheap to pay someone.

    Dilemmas.

The main copper vent/drain at the kitchen sink let loose last year or year before. Took care of that one fairly easy.

Chasing galvanized pipe is not one of my favorite pastimes.
Attempting to replace even a single galvanized pipe piece or fitting can result in a days worth of work and 10's of feet of pipe.

Well, I guess I will not ask how much a service call is to Fort Wayne. :)

As of about this time last year, I no longer have any galvanized pipe in the house. I replaced everything with pex when I built the addition on the house. I put shut offs on everything too.

I probably tore out 500 pounds of galvanized. So glad that mess is gone.
Thats my plan later this fall when work is slow. All my work will be in the garage and crawl space.

First project for that is to dig out the crawl access and make it a little more dad bod friendly.

That also requires the "patio" to come up. And moving the kamado joe.

And that is why I have put it off.

Good to keep a little repair stock on hand. Yes I've always heard to start water repairs early as they surprise you later.

I keep a 5 gallon bucket of odd fittings, copper, and brass valves, unions, 90 degree elbows, and caps for multi sized piping fixes. Teflon tape. pipe sealer, Gorilla tape. Add to the other bucket of pipe wrenches, multi size Channel locks, Adj wrenches. WD40, Rust Breaker sprays.

Last and not least, Turbo Torch with spare tank, silver solder, fluxes, sil fos rod, soft solder(stay brite), more sealer stuff. Sawzall, tubing cutters(all different sized), flaring tools, swaging tools, AC gauges, test VOM meters, drills/bits. So, say you have a drippy pipe huh?
Sold my GMC van to haul around my hardware store.

I own a rental unit with all galvanized pipe. Everything appears to be in fairly good shape, but I'm concerned about a future issue... My house is all pex. :)
