Looks like she did ok without them.
Yes, but when I taught lifesaving, I would show articles of the rescuer dying.
    It happens all to frequently
I would do it to try to scare people a bit, to hopefully get them to listen.

Worked on my when I was a 60 pound kid having to 'rescue' the instructor that was probably 250 pounds.
I didn't 'stop and evaluate at 2 body lengths', and the instructor climbed up and held me down for a bit.

    She did good.
She did GREAT. Good for her.
But, better to increase your chances if it happens again.

Always had AARs after drills and incidents on the reactor in the navy. There was always room to improve, even if you were successful.

Funny thing is, most cops aren't taught water lifesaving techniques. They should be, but they aren't.

I don't know if they 'should be'.

But, when I was teaching scouts, I told myself...
The type of person that's gonna risk their life to save another, will do it if they are trained... or not.
So, it was my job to try to give them the info and the training, to increase the odds of their survival.
Because, if I didn't, then they'd still do it, with worse odds.

Traffic cone. What the heck. I didn't have any fancy stuff like that for my courses (not police related)
I just had bricks and lead weights.

And some people who are trained aren't going to act. Once again, something that should be seen as a good thing devolves into a pissing contest because the officer didn't know how to swim. Most departments don't require it. I appreciate you teaching scouts the skills to survive if they are ever faced with a water rescue situation.
