Sorry if this is a dup, but I searched and didn't find anything.

I was was traveling today and stopped at the Rural King in Terre Haute. Almost picked up a little 22 rifle I've been considering for my kids and then noticed their signs posted everywhere. You must take any firearms purchased out of the store in a locked case. If you don't have one with you or if the rifle doesn't come with one, they'll be glad to sell you one.

WTF kind of policy is this? It's bad enough that you usually get escorted out of stores like this with any new firearms purchase, but this is something I've never seen.

I travel frequently and have never seen this at any other RK stores. Needless to say I didn't plan to have a "dumb tax" put on my purchase of a $150 rifle with a $20 case. Rant over...

Any comments or experience with this?

You could always use the case to carry it out of the store, proceed to your vehicle, attach a sling and then go back into the store with the slung rifle to return the unneeded case. That's what I would do.;)

I've seen stores with this policy that will escort you out with a sample case, then at the car open it and remove the firearm for you. This is probably a misunderstanding in store policy

The Terre Haute RK is close to a Grade School and ISU Stadium is across the street. Not had that happen or seen signs. I'll inquire next time I'm in there.

If they are located within a certain distance of a school zone, by law the firearm is required to be in a locked case when it leaves the store. This could be the issue.

As I understand it, this comes from a very narrow reading of laws concerning school zones and the "Secured Container" statement in the IC. I expect the RK Legal staff is afraid of both losing the company FFL and/or being sued.
Yes, the Martinsville store operates the same way. I chuckled as the counter guy told me this and pointed out that anyone with a LTCH could walk up and down the sidewalk by that school (Polsten Rd) with a holstered handgun and be perfectly legal. He just shrugged his shoulders and retreated to the 'It's Store Policy" meme.

Just return the unneeded locking case. Very simple.

Michigan has or had a law requiring all firearms leaving a store to be with a gun lock. I always stopped at a Meijer's and picked up a gun lock with receipt, bought the gun, then stopped at Meijer's and returned the gun lock.

Man, that's what I call "creative marketing 101". Maybe every gas station should require you to buy an insurance policy and a fire extinguisher and a Nomex suit before you are allowed to pump gas. If it only saves one life, right? We don't want to make money - we just want to sell gasoline!

I was in the middle of pumping gas once and my cell phone rang. I answered it and was talking and the gas station attendant shut the pump off and got on the intercom and told me it was dangerous to pump gas while on a cell phone. Lol. Even though I was only half full, that was the end of my sale. I drove next door to the Shell station and finished filling up.

It does not say from a store... Just anywhere. I would say just a store policy for everyone, not to cherry pic who is a Permit carrier and who is not... Here is the info...
