Free float question

Is there any benefit to having a gap free top rail. Usually I don't see the slots on them anyway. The ones in stock I can find don't have gap free rail but now I'm not sure I need It aside just the looks of it.

Purely aesthetic. If you are trying to 'float' the thing, why would you risk this contact point between the rail and receiver.
