Free topographical maps online from USGS

There are free USGS topological maps available for download as PDFs at http://store.usgs.gov. Their map locator and downloader is a Google-based map of the US that you can zoom in on any area, and see what coverage they have.

If you own an iPhone, check out Offline Topo Maps app by Trail Behind. Easy to download/store maps and use your phone as a GPS. You don't need to be connected because it'll store the maps offline. Screen/map quality is better than most handheld GPS, and best of all, it's free.

I recently found out about this too... just printed off a full size topo map on the plotter at work!

Go here USGS Historic Quadrangle Scanning Project to get the full quadragle maps that you can download as pdf's (BIG files) and print.

Before I had been using mytopo.com and could only print out small maps.
