I do envy all you "greying gentlemen" that had the pleasure of knowing Sen. Hoopenstein, I only get to know of his legacy and wonder if I'll ever get a chance to see a man like that in my lifetime.

Is it true that the zookeeper that accidentally released the kangaroo committed suicide shortly thereafter?

Some call it that because Senator Larry Hoopenstein was the guy behind the bill that was passed into law. His favorite color was pink. He was tragically killed by a kangaroo that had escaped from the Indianapolis zoo. Hence the nickname Larry.

Ironically, the kangaroo was also named "Larry". It's a weird, weird world we live in.

In case you weren't aware of this, the man in this video is Sen. Hoopenstein's grandson.

Even stranger is how it got the name. Zoo keepers noted that when it was young it didn't like to be carried in it's mother pouch, they joked that the mother needed a license to carry him.
