Well, I'm back from the garage. I have a Chamberlain opener, about 7 years old. The release has to pull forward (away from the door) then down. Definitely worth a trip to Lowes/Wal-Mart/etc. for zip-ties if you have the type of release that can be opened with a coat hanger.

that is funny! when i lock myself out of the house that is how i get in. i keep a hanger that is pre bent in the flower bed.

I fixed mine the 1st day I installed it. If you want to manually open you have to be inside.
