Life, Trouble, Sorry are great classic games. Apples to Apples and Scattergories are a lot of fun, especially when you have company.

One quick game we love is nowhere to go. Its VERY fast paced and great for littler kids because they dont get bored. Imagine chess when you are down to like 4 pieces left. Its only a handful of moves before checkmate.

(It says educational and we bought it at the united arts and education store, but Im not sure what its teaching, unless they consider chess educational too)

    Scrabble, hi ho cherry o.

Card games are our thing. Crazy eights, war, trash, go fish, slap jack, rummy, old maid, poker, going to start euchre training soon also. My kids will even play solitaire with an actual deck of cards. We grew up around the table playing card games.

Monopoly Deal (card-game version of monopoly) has become a favorite of ours. It's family friendly, each game takes about 15-30 minutes usually, and it still involves a great deal of strategy.

With a 12YO? Probably not for a few more years.

We just finished a game of Telestrations tonite. I havent played a single round where somebody didnt end up laughing hysterically. (tonight included, when my son drew "cold feet" and Mom got "fuzzy slippers" from it. LOL )
