I have done it with no special tools, but would recommend a few for you. The first being the barrel wrench.

    Short AR-15 Combo Wrench Tool

I got that one and while it is cheaper than some i have seen, works great.

The other tool i would get is a upper vice block.

EGW Flattop Upper Receiver Block AR-10, AR-15 Matte - MidwayUSA

That one is only for flat tops, but i like it alot.

AR Uppers are very simple to put together, find a decent tutorial, and about 45 min, and your upper will be complete!

^^^ This^^^ It's not that hard. I built my first AR with no experience, a borrowed barrel wrench, and a copy of the Marine Corp's Armorer's manual. The entire rifle only took about two hours.

Google is your friend when it comes to finding AR parts. I just found the part I wanted and then searched the internet for the best price. J&T Distributing has a lot of nice parts. I've had good luck with my parts from Model 1 Sales as well. The last AR I built was with several parts from Yankee Hill Machine (YHM). Good luck with the build.
