I know it sounds like a stupid question but I have found myself just burning through socks like crazy the last few years... they just fall apart.

Socks are about the last thing I need to add to my BoB and I want to know who makes good socks? I am particular about my feat and don't need the toes opening up in the middle of nowhere.

Am I the only one here whos socks look like swiss cheese after only a month of use lol?

I own a few pair of really good socks that are more specific to what I'm doing. I almost always use a liner if I'm going to be hiking or outdoors for a long time. Poly liners are great, reduce friction a LOT! I own some Under Armour boot socks that have been great so far. For colder weather I bought some snowboarding socks. Otherwise I own hiking socks but can't recall the brand. Mainly I look for socks that are designed for hard use like that. My only socks that wear out are my no-show running socks interestingly enough. All my packs have several pairs of brand new ordinary white tube socks as good socks are expensive, so my back-ups are cheap.

Darn Tough Socks. Merino wool blend. Great socks. Not cheap. They have "tactical" too...don't know what they are...probably old porn movie socks with black tape for your eyes.

I really like the RedHead Lifetime Guarantee socks from Bass Pro. They are around 80% wool and 20% nylon. They wick moisture well and tend to stay up on the calves well, I hate sagging socks. I wear them every day and the best thing is that Bass Pro will replace them for free if you wear them out. I had one pair develop a hole in the heel, took them to the customer service counter and easily exchanged for a new pair. They cost $10/pair which is a bit pricey, but with the guarantee it is a good deal.

Manatee is dead on. DARN TOUGH SOCKS - made in USA and last longer than any wool sock I have ever owned. Come in multiple thicknesses and styles. I sent my daughter who is at college in Spokane 4 pairs. These are the only socks she used all season snowboarding, rock climbing and running around. Hasn't put a dent in them she says.

    my 2 cents

I work in one of the harshest industrial enviornments available. I havn't found a sock that doesn't get destroyed in 2-3 months (If you think you got a pair that will last ill buy some and test them for you) but my favorite are dickies premium steel toe boot socks. I get a couple months out of them then they are shot. They are about $6 for 2 pair.

I usually wear browning socks. They make a couple models of wool blend socks that i really like but can only get during certain times of the year at Rural King.

In 2005 Sam's Club was selling black Gold Toe socks 3 or 4 to a pack for $12 or so. I bought probably a 1 and 1/2dozen pairs. I've worn them almost every day since and had my first wear out of one a few months ago. I had never had quite so good a performance previously from any brand. Before that, I was lucky to get a few months in before holes appeared.

Smart Wool as mentioned. I have just recently worn holes in a couple pair. They were 14 years old. They make several thicknesses and lengths. I like the med weight hikers for most applications. They are not cheap, about 15 bucks but hey, 14 years!

Thorlo. Took 3 pair to Afghanistan 5 years ago. Wore them for a year straight. 1 pair was stolen part way through the tour. Still wearing other 2 pair regularly.
