I won't dispute the argument about the "concealed" part of this... but it irkes me to see this constant argument over wether it is a "permit" or a "license".

Sure it is a license... but why is it such a crime to call it a Permit? I could care less.:dunno:

    It's not a crime, it's just incorrect.

Why people who know what it's called still prefer to call it something else is beyond me.

It is a license. There is no argument if you live in Indiana it is a license. Look at it, what does it say before " to carry a handgun"

I suppose you have a drivers permit?

    Just west of Evansville
I got my CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT in '77. In 2011 after Frosty terrorized the people at the zoo it turned into a LICENSE TO CARRY a HANDGUN. Even if TF gets tarred and feathered, banned from the west side of Evansville for life and has to take a course on proper manners I have learned from him and will be eternally grateful (sniff.) :D The man's a freakin' legend.

Well some states do issue a concealed carry permit, right? So it's kind of like the mag vs clip thing, it wouldn't be that big of deal if some guns didn't in fact use a clip.....

Yep, that and 3 letters of recommendation.
Yeah I remember all this back then. You could either get the Hunting and Target practice license which was cheaper and easier to get because you did'nt have to provide a letter of intent or you could try and get the Personal Protection license.

Back in those days there was still a waiting period when you purchased a firearm unless you had either license then you could take it home with you the same day. We've come a long way since then.

If someone from those states called it a permit they would be correct. Since ours is called a license well you see where this is going. The mag and clip situation:

From a different source: A magazine is what is used to feed the weapon itself, whereas a clip is used to feed the magazine. Clips make loading of magazines much easier and faster, and in some cases, a clip is required in order for the magazine to work (e.g. M1 Garand).

Some magazines are removable (like in the case of all of the magazines pictured above), and depending on the design of the gun, it can have a fixed magazine. Most SKS's, bolt actions, shotguns, and Garands have fixed magazines.

In the case of "stripper clips", you simply "strip" the rounds off of the clip and into the magazine. In the case of the "en bloc" clip used by the M1 Garand, you simply place the clip into the fixed magazine and the clip stays in the mag as the weapon fires.

It is speculated that the confusion and misuse of the terms came about in the world of guns when troops who used the M1 Garand in the US Military started using other firearms and continued to used the term "clip" when referring to what was actually a magazine.

Whatever the reason for the incorrect use of the term, it's there and it is often misused by many new shooters.

Another term that is often misused is the term "bullet". Many people use that term to refer to the complete round/cartridge.

The bullet is simply the projectile that is fired from the weapon, and only 1 of 4 parts that a round of ammunition truly consists of (which includes the case, powder, and the primer).

Something else to think about: would you want your doctor, mechanic, plumber etc calling one thing something it's not and then saying "you know what I mean"

I still have my first one. Seems like I remember having to write a letter explaining the reason that you needed one?

For my first one I didn't have to write a letter but I remember sitting
in the Sheriffs office with about 10 other people that were all applying
for the license at the same time (I think they only did it on mondays or thursdays at the time)
and we were all being asked by a deputy the reason for wanting to get the license.
Everyone went around the room and gave the same answer "personal protection"
He said he was required to ask but did not agree with asking...
(I did not ask who required that info.... Maybe the Sheriff at the time?)
He went on to say they should just follow the constitution and be done with it.
