I'm running very low on storage space in my house and want to know your thoughts on storing guns in an unheated garage. The garage is attached to the house however the garage door and the exterior wall are not insulated at all. So what do you all think? Thanks

I took my #2000 behemoth, without guns, and even though I left it on the 4x4s, this space keeps the moisture from messing with the bottom of the safe from the garage floor. So as to make security a non-issue, I took out each lag bolt holding the safe to the timbers, and drilled clear through and anchored the safe through the 4x4s well into the concrete. It took a little work, but at least I can clean under it, without worrying someone with a pallet jack could get away with it, even though they'd need a liftgate truck also.:D I use a golden rod, and it keeps it nice and toasty inside with no problems for any of the weapons or ammo stored inside. If I ever leave, I also make sure there's a car in the garage, without keys, so as to make life miserable for anyone with ambitious goals. I might add, even though my garage isn't "heated", with the insulated garage door, it is quite comfortable out there during the coldest winters.

It's also not on an outside wall.:)

Is it on an outside wall? When do you go to work?

West wall, next to the door. Could you feed the Rotti and turn off the alarm when you come in? Oh and bring some help because one person cant move the ammo thats in it much less the guns, gold, porno mags and the weight of the safe.:D

I made room inside the house and I'm happy I did. Another thing to consider is getting into a garage is pretty simple and removing a safe with a PU truck at that point is simple. Even if it's bolted down, you could back into it with a truck or pop it off the anchors with a tow strap.

    Just another consideration.

I know a guy with two safes in unheated sheds. He just keeps a 40w lamp in there and has been that way for many years with no problems.

I have the same situation. Mine is in an unheated garage. I plan on making a stand for the safe, and bolting it all down. Right now its on carpet, and you can get dehumidifiers at Dicks. Either 10 bucks or 30. Up to you which one. You shouldn't worry about anything

Thanks for the input. I'm still a little leery about keep them in the garage. I just don't have many options for inside.

^^I've been in many warehouses and most are climate controlled....at least to some degree. So I would assume most that have firearms are too but I could be wrong. But you are correct in that trucks are not, however long term storage in the garage is going to be quite a bit different. This is what I'm worried about...I don't want the guns to incur any damage.

The only thing that will happen is when you take them from unheated garage and take them in the house were it is warm they will sweat but leave them sit for a for about half an hour and they will dry out no problems.

If you are going to put it out there, at least do yourself the favor of buying a good dehumidifier. Make sure to get the 'rod' type like the ones listed above. That would be a must to deal with that humidity that us Hoosiers put up with in the summers.

They keep the safe temperature warm (in effect reducing the humidity), which would be a benefit too during these cold months.

I've kept one in the unheated half of my two room garage for several years now with no problems. The other half I heat with a wood stove, but not all the time. I was actually more concerned about the summer and high humidity. But that hasn't been a problem either. I do keep them well oiled and check them often.

It can be done with no problems, you just have to keep the inside of the safe warmer than the outside air to keep the humidity down. The use of a "Goldenrod" or similar product to add heat will do just fine.

I do agree with bolting the safe to the floor. Garages are too easy to get in to.
