Do you think guns in the future will look anything like they do today? What about the ammo they fire? This should be intresting

Caseless, magnetically fired. Once the power units get down in size so they will fit in something smaller than, say, a barge.

Once you go caseless, the possibilities are endless in terms of shape and aerodynamics, impact vs penetration, etc.

One can argue that smokeless powder is going to be the "trend" prior to any groundbreaking 21st century inventions taking place that satisfies the "needs and wants" of the tacticool and mall ninjas.

They may be more like tasers than 1911's.

I hope they don't change much. I like them just they way they are now :) don't get me wrong though lasers would be awesome!!
And expensive. Also when you hit your paper targets they would catch fire. Or when you shot your metal targets it would melt a hole through it.

Some gun manufacturers already place RFID chips into their guns.
They have a serial number inside that you cannot change, and of course you can use those chips to find out where you go with the gun.
Same way you can be traced with your phone.
We could also imagined built-in RFID scanners in the gun and a RFID chip inside the skin of the user's hand. This way only the user could use the gun and you couldn't take the gun away from a LEO for example and shoot him with his own gun.
That could also keep underaged children to fire a weapon, keep someone who breaks into your house to use your own weapon against you etc ...
One gun could regognize more than one user (like dad and mom) and deny access to the kids in the house.

Of course all that would lead to more gun control so it's not really a good thing.
The same RFID technology could other be used to trace each round of ammo.

Rail gun, would be very cool. I believe there is already work being done on them
This was part of "Star Wars" system proposed during the Reagan Administration. They were what was supposed to be used to destroy incoming ballistic missiles. "Fired" a steel or Iron projectile in a similar fashion that Maglev trains work. So the technology is there whether they actually built any is probably still Classified.

Except RFID is passive, and can not be used to trace someone. Tracking ammo through micro-etched serial numbers has been proposed before. Think of it less as a method to track, and more as a method to drive cost up.

Caseless will be the future, and I think more and more ultralight designs.

What if the RFID scanners in store and other places, they could tell where you go with that gun. :dunno:

That's like a GPS but it's still tracing.

How far out in the future? Civilian or military?

20-50 years? Still lots of gunpowder for civilians, lasers/rails/coils for military. Caseless ammo and all kinds of strange composites. All a matter of costs.

50-100 years? If energy storage costs come down, then more "fun" stuff for the civilians. I don't see a Star Wars style blaster for the general consumer in my lifetime. MAYBE a coil/rail gun.

100+ years? At the rate we are going, we might be back to sharpened sticks,
