18 U.S.C. § 1715: "Pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person are nonmailable and shall not be deposited in or carried by the mails or delivered by any officer or employee of the Postal Service."
I saw no exemption for a police officer putting it in a residential mailbox for temporary safe keeping. However, there are conditions listed under which a handgun might be mailed.
Further, if the mail carrier happened by to deliver mail while it was in the box, we might be looking at 18 U.S.C. § 1701, dealing with Obstruction of Mails: "Whoever knowingly and willfully obstructs or retards the passage of the mail, or any carrier or conveyance carrying the mail, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both." I imagine this would apply if the handgun filled a large enough portion of the box that it became difficult for the mail carrier to put mail in the box (like a package that fills up most of the box - we get those regularly).
In short, I don't think he should have put the handgun in the mailbox.
Oh, and those drive-up mailboxes at my post office? I can fit much more than a letter in there. The door opens fairly widely.
