Loaded up some 260 grain Keith style SWCs for the .45 Colt cylinder of my Ruger New Vaquero .45 convertible. The bullets are sitting on top of 8.5 grains of Unique and are running 900 fps out of the 5 1/2" barrel. Overall length could not be any longer. ;)
I figured that they would make a decent bear load when I head back to Montana for more Elk/Mule deer hunting.

This is a new load, as far as the bullet goes. My "normal" load uses a 240 grain truncated cone cast bullet.
I shoot these out of the Vaquero and my 1873 Winchester.

I know I am using an OLD manual, but my Speer #10, shows 20.5 gr., of 296 behind a 260 gr., JHP bullet .....

Are you SURE that data is SAFE ?????

and shows only 1183 fps .....

they are some that run upwards 27gr of 269 with the same bullet........never had had a bulged case or pushed or flat primers with Starline brass ......1430fps to 1470fps is what i recorded with my RCBS AMMOMASTER.........at 24gr it is around 34,000 and Blackhawks are up to 40,000......

"*To DEFINE SAFE: ANY LOAD THAT DOES NOT EXCEED THE INDUSTRY'S RECOMMENDED MAXIMUM OPERATIONAL PRESSURE.. In the case of the .44 magnum, this is 40,000 CUP. Not to exceed 43,500 ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM.*

The Ruger Blackhawks and Bisley models chambered for .45 Colt are approximately 80% as strong as the same Ruger chambered for .44 magnum. This means we can load the .45 Colt to 80% of the pressure of the .44 Magnum round and still maintain the 100% safety level. 80% of 40,000 is 32,000 CUP.

To check our findings we again turned to H.P White Labs and their findings paralleled ours. Ruger Blackhawks in .45 Colt caliber were destroyed in controlled test conditions at approximately 60,000 CUP pressure levels."

Djones, these were cast from a Lyman #454424 mold and sized to .452"
I believe the RCBS SSA mold is a 270 grain.

    Seancass,
You are correct on the John Linebaugh quote. Yes, I trust his data too. My New model Vaquero is not near as strong as a Blackhawk but I am not trying to punish myself or the revolver with my loads either.

In a short barreled Blackhawk my brother had a 296 load with the Lyman 454190 that he was beer can accurate with at fifty yards for one cylinder full.

The Rugers can do awesome things with 45Colt.

They're not too shabby in .357mag and .44mag either...;)
