Ok so Im really liking Rugers new SR-762 but I wonder if just getting a big bore for my standard AR15 lower will curb my needs. I don't have a longer range rifle and wonder if something like a 6.5 or 6.8 will help fill that niche. Or is there another cal that will? I know my 5.56 will reach out to 5-600 yards but I want more "knock down" further out. What say ya'll?

Yes. That's why I chose the Ruger 308. Plus its a piston upper. I know a 308 upper wont fit a standard lower. If the 308 did fit Id just get a 308 upper. That's why I asked about the 6.5 or 6.8 or other calibers.

On a side note, I am not a reloader. I don't shoot often enough to justify it.....yet.

Ok then good deal. Yea if your wanting to shoot either of those calibers you will probably need to get into reloading or ammo is gonna eat you alive in cost if you shoot it much.

I built a 7.62x39 upper for one of my AR15 lowers.
Model 1 Sales barrel and bolt, C-Products mags and I was off and running.

It's not the x51, but it's a little bigger than the 5.56, and less than 1/4 the price of an AR10.

Full disclosure- I also have an AR10

I also thought this Mgderf, and I already have ammo for my AK, I want to reach out further than my 5.56. Btw, is the 762x39 more accurate in an AR than an AK?

Sgreen3, that's why Im ever so slightly leaning toward 308. The ammo may not be cheaper than 6.5 or 6.8, but its more available.

Save your pennies and go the AR10/ ar10 clone market. .308 is relatively cheap in the larger bore market, and will do anything you can dream up here in the midwest out to 1000 yards. I have a DPMS LR-308, and love it. Later, if you get into reloading, you can always get a .300 blackout upper for you AR, and have components that work for more than one caliber.

That is very true, not to mention even if you do decide to reload an your running the 308round youll find more load data as well as bullet and brass choices. Definitely something to consider.

Rider, its not weather I can afford the gun or upper, its where my money is more well spent! lol

I do plan on eventually building a reloading room in the new garage going up this spring but until then, like I said, I don't shoot a lot now but hope to in the future.
