My boy will be 9 next month and im looking at options for his next long gun. Currently he has a Marlin Papose that breaks down. He is a smaller frame kid and that gun seems a little long for him. Not looking at shotguns for another year or two.

Im propably leaning towards a .17HMR or another .22. Was looking at the Henry .22 lever rifles but read reviews that you have to feed the ammo thru the barrel, which doesnt seem to be teaching the proper shooting basics by looking down the barrel.

    Thanks for any help.

id go with a ruger 10/22.yes its a very common gun.but its something he could hold on to for years and modifying it out however he would like to.

Another vote for the 10/22 Ruger, so many accessories.
In a couple of years he could change the look completely if he wanted.
I wouldn't mind having one of them combo 410/.22 for myself.

Instead of waiting another year, have him shoulder the single shot .410 and .20ga NEF shotguns. The .410 is like shooting a .22 and really the .20ga doesnt have much more recoil in these, they have a pretty good heft to them.

Or get him sterted with a handgun like a Ruger MK II or III series.22lr pistol, still cheap to shoot (relatively speaking) and you can start the safety traing and marksmanship training on handguns.

My son started shooting bows and .22s at 5, now at 16 he has his own AR, G19 and Rem 870s and a mloader.... he would also say that he has a Garand, M1A, 1911 etc.... anything I have he thinks is his too !!!

I cant really afford to take him to the range anymore!!!:ar15::ar15:

3 calibers one gun, interchangeable barrels, single shot
Popular calibers include, but are not limited to:
    .22lr/.410/.204Ruger
    .22lr/20ga/.243
    .22lr/12ga/.223
and just about your choice of configuration
Still a single shot, but a VERY versatile gun he'll be able to use for a life-time, and for a variety of purposes.
Also a GREAT safety training weapon
That said, I have a Savage model 24 .22lr/.410 O/U that I would not trade for ANYTHING!

Ohhhh the Trifect is a good idea, too! They also make them in a .22LR/20Ga/.44 Magnum configuration, the latter being useful for deer hunting in Indiana.

Be advised, though, that if it's anything like their .22/20ga combo, the gun kicks like a mule with the shotgun barrel. The small stock and light weight combined to bruise me pretty good. Stick a slip on recoil pad on, though, and it's a total ***** cat to shoot.

I would go with the Henry Mini Bolt or Ruger 10/22 CRR. The Henry is smaller and lighter. Also single shot which is nice for teaching. The CRR is the compact 10/22. I have one for my son but he is not yet old enough. Fun little gun that I find myself shooting. Both rifles have decent open sights.

All kidding aside it depends on what you think he is ready for and mature enough for.

Does he go with you when you shoot pistol??? P22 would be a great training tool..

No i only take him for the long guns. I'd like to wait on pistol. .410 could have been a option but i see most are too long. I think the Marlin is 34", and seems a little long for him.

My first long gun was a model 60 I wanted a 10/22 but my dad said it cost to much and that magazine will break in a week...

    That was at 10.

Saved and bought my 10/22 at 15, I love the Marlin for the memories and learned how to shot on it(still own it take it out abought once a year) but my 10/22s will never rust because I use 1 or more of them every time I hit the range.

Sounds like a Crickett rifle might be something to check into. My boy has one. It's actually a good little shooter, and he still likes it better than his Savage .22, because it's much easier for him to handle.

I gave him a Anshutz Woodchucker passed down from my gradfather and its perfect for the next few years but it needs a mag and can't find them anywhere. Might also be a problem with firing because it wont even single shot fire.
