    Hey guys,
I just got hired on as a reserve police officer and I am so excited. I have to purchase my own side-arm. I have very little experience with guns and not the biggest budget. What do you guys recommend. The only rule was no 9mm.

    Thanks

Congrats. Here's what I would go with (oh wait, I did just go with this). You can get law enforcement discounting through these guys and the prices are hard to beat ($471 shipped). This is the .45 model that I just bought. You could try the .40 as well if you wanted more capacity.

They also have Glocks and XDs in the same price range.

Congrats! I thought most departments provided a firearm for Reserve Officers. What department is this?

    I'd second the Glock 22.

What does the rest of your department carry. One that I would look at would be the Springfield XD .45 compact. It has a 4" barrel and comes with a 10 rd flush fitting mag and a 13rd extended grip mag. For duty you can use the 13 rd extended grip mags and carry 2 extra 13 rd. mags, then off duty you can conceal carry with the 10 rd. flush mag. The only thing I don't know about is if they have any duty holsters and mag carriers that fit this gun. When my Department was switching from 9mm to .45 one of the guns we tested and evaluated was the Springfield XD, which we liked but it had just come out so we were concerned with "new gun" bugs. We went with the Sig P220.

Don Hume does make duty gear for the XD 45 compact.

A Glock would be hard to beat for someone who's inexperienced with guns and is going to have some capacitance as a law enforcement person.

One thing you may want to do though is to talk to the officers in the department and see what they carry. If most are carrying x brand & model, that wouldn't be a bad choice as you'd have common magazines and you could pick one of their guns up if things go really bad and be proficient (similarly, they could pick your gun up too).

Good luck and practice as much as you possibly can.

Depends. Do you want a polymer frame, or metal. Do you want a hammerless, or hammer fired pistol. Do you want a manual safety, or no. What is your budget? Allot of people are saying Glock. I say fondle, and if possible shoot as many pistols as you can. I can suggest allot of guns. However you must find what you really want, what fits your budget, is comfortable, and what you can shoot accurately.

Id go with the same thing the full time guys are carrying. They most likely have an armorer on the department, but the biggest benefit is that the mags will interchange. They probably wont buy your ammo if you carry a different caliber.

What do the merit officers carry? Carry that.

Interchangeability and mag-sharing could be important in your line of work. Not to mention the ability to buy their second-hand gear, ammo, and parts.

I agree with everyone who says, look at what other officers carry. But my question, and concern is this, You are someone without experience with a handgun, dont you think you should have some ability to use a handgun before you become a peace officer, or is this my opinion. (I am not trying to be rude, I am just asking)
