Cabela's bought a small manufacturer. It's their store brand. Shoots fine.

I use to shoot 7.62x39 of herters. We have gone through the 1000 rounds and have not had any issues yet, then again its food for the AK.

Ive only ever used the rifle ammo, but most of the russian places also make some kind of brass cased ammo as well.

its not a manufacturer that cabelas purchased, all the bought was the name, and they have made it their house brand ammo.

The steel stuff is Russian - namely Tula. I'm not sure who makes their brass but it's almost definitely rebadged ammo from a big manufacturer. Shoots fine.

My info came from a manager @ the Hammond, IN store so... consider it a gun store employee rumour. :ingo:

OP depends on what flavor and caliber of Herter's ammo you are talking about. The name "Herter's" is the Cabela's name for re-packaged ammo made exclusivily for them.

There are 3 different 'flavors' of Herter's ammo.

Herter's = steel case ammo both in rifle and pistol calibers
(original way Cabela's introduced the ammo)

Herter's Select Grade = brass ammo both in rifle and pistol calibers
    (2nd introduction by Cabela's)

Herter's Aluminum Case = Aluminum cases for pistol calibers
    (3rd introdution by Cabela's)

The steel ammo is mainly made in russan and is Tulsa ammo (mainly) just rebranded for Cabela's.

The brass ammo is a mix of made in the USA and elsewhere. There is a plant owned by Fiocchi in Ozark, Missouri that makes some of the handgun calibers for Cabela's there. Rifle calibers I'm not sure where those are made.

The Aluminum ammo is re-branded CCI Blazer ammo made in the USA.

It's all good ammo and will work just fine in your rifles/handguns. I have shot the steel stuff in AKs, ARs, Heavy Scar, Mosin, M1 30 carbine, FAL and have had no issues with it.

Have not used the handgun calibers nor their brass stuff.

I search but haven't found much about this brand. Any feedback you can give me would be appreciated. They carry it at Cabela's.

I bought some Herters .308 Winchester from Cabelas a few weeks back. The box says "Made in Russia". It's steel-cased and looks to be well made. I've fired a few and have no complaints.

I thought it was a good price. Only down-side is the reload-ability of steel-cased ammo. I know some do it, but I'm a skeptic that steel is good for more than one loading. Brass is soft and malleable, steel is not.
