Have we lost the creative spark.

My entirely unsupported, evidence-free theory: Everyone is on antidepressants and mood stabilizers and stuff now, and that's why they can competently churn out the same remakes and reboots but can't come up with a new idea or take a creative risk to save their own lives.

Well, that, and the cult of "name recognition" taking over the studio boardrooms.

The studios don't exist to entertain us. They exist to make money. They make their money by entertaining us. Don't put the cart before the horse, and it's easier to understand. When they need some money, they look first at things that have made money before, and copy or remake them, depending on what rights they own. This is why they'll rarely make something truly creative. There's too much risk of losing millions of dollars. Most new things come out of the independents that put our entertainment first and are willing to take the chance with a smaller budget and harder work. A lot of them fail.

Star Wars was a hard sell as a new project. Lucas is a hack writer, but he did miracles in the studio on a pretty small budget and made a product that resonated. When the studio saw how much money it made, they quickly adopted it, feeling confident throwing money at it because they knew it would make more, but sequels can be a different animal if there's someplace for the story to go. There were also a number of cheesy space operas that came out trying to cash in on the Star Wars phenomenon. They mostly just demonstrated the suckitude that comes with recycling.

Totally agree, but I think Blade and Picard aren't great examples.

How about literally re-animating things like the Lion King with CGI.
    .

They had to use CGI the live action remake had “problems”.

All true, but the giant elephant in the room is they now play to the International market.

Another factor is Hollywood loathes American values and conservative themes, Clint is about the only one that will take up patriotic topics. Movies like American Sniper did very well but the elite hated it.

I think he was the MAN's UNCLE.
I liked mine better, silly old spy series are boring. The public WANTS superheroes that check all the SJW boxes. But wait, I may be wrong, since they’re SUPERheroes, they must be rayciss, and are appropriating the hero culture, and by calling them SUPER, they are saying they are better than normal heroes, and not everyone is the same? I’m so confused?
