Your friend seems misguided. With today's controlled expansion bullets like the Hornady XTP and critical duty loads you literally have bullets that can pass through barriers up to and including car windshields and still have good performance on tissue. The only arena that FMJ loads are better is price. So FMJ is great for training but for defense a good quality JHP is so much better at least in my opinion and if your concerned about penetration a bonded hollow point like Winchester ranger bonded might be a better choice. I know my Glock .40 shots the Winchester ranger stuff reliably and accurately but it's a bit pricey.

Then he will only need one hollow point because it wont feed after that.

 That is sorta kinda not true. There are some hollowpoints that do not play well with 1911s. My 1911 has 9 hollowpoints in it and I have no doubt they will all leave the barrel at high velocity if the situation dictates

Gold Dot Hps are my preferred 1911, and G21 load. I may carry a third mag on occasion, and that will be loaded with 230 Hard Ball. My defense shotgun magazine(tubular) is cross loaded: slug, 00 buck, #4, slug, 00 buck, #4 in the breech, safety on. 25 rd shell belt hanging, is also loaded same way and with steel shot for hunting.

    Revolvers: Hp's always.
