If it were my daughter I'd probably sit her down & explain how some folks "pick" on other folks to make themselves feel "superior" - and that sometimes their target could be of a different skin color, other times it could be another persons weight, or gender, or crooked teeth, or income, or profession, or ... the list is really endless.

But I would make absolutely sure that my daughter knew that the problem was with THEM & that none of it was because that there was something wrong with HER.

South Bend is a very racially diverse community, so I am pretty surprised.

South Bend has been in the hands of liberals and socialists for about 2 decades now. This kind of action is what that environment breeds.

Taking it out on a kid is pretty bad, and there is no excuse.

Interesting, you're implying that racists tend to be opponents liberals and socialists (conservatives and capitalists). I'm pretty sure that's not how you meant to come off, but racists can be from all walks of life. There are plenty of black, jew, latino, as well as white racists. Nation of Islam (Liberal) is IMO the same thing as the Klu Klux Klan (Conservative)

Regarding South Bend - Diversity isn't all it's cracked up to be. Typically it just leads to balkanization which leads to hate and violence.

Regarding Racism - People are jerks. They'll find lots of reasons to hate you. Short, fat, tall, thin, smart dumb, where you live, what you wear, what you eat, what you drive, and of course your color.

What others have said is good. I would also caution her to not fall into the same trap and identify herself as a race. She is not what she looks like, she is what she acts like. Even though it's really really hard to deny that appearance plays a role in a person's identity, it needs to be at least secondary.

She is not the Puerto Rican girl who is really smart and nice. She is the really smart and nice girl who was born in Puerto Rico.

It's a subtle difference, but subconsciously, she could seperate herself from others and be just as guilty.

Not saying that she is. It's just an observation that I've made during my 31 years on this rock.

We hear the term racism being thrown out everywhere when it does not qualify, a pretty big peeve of mine.
i.e. disagreeing with the policies of the obama administration = you are obviously a racist.

The people that engage in that behavior don't have a care in the world for the diminishing effect it has on REAL acts of racism like your daughter faced.

Tell her that scumbags will be scumbags, and that they are the trash of society and to pay them no mind.

Again, people that cannot live with their neighbors in a civilized society
need to be kicked out of said society.
