I had to attend the funeral of a relative today and while the procession was escorted by two motorcycles, I saw something that made me have a little more faith in people. The vast majority of vehicles we met pulled over and stayed pulled over until the last of the line of mourners had passed. There were some asshats that slowly creeped forward and one with New York plates that passed a couple of cars that were pulled over but 99% of the vehicles sat there respectfully. One guy south of town actually got out of his car and stood beside the door until we all passed which is I have never seen. My aunt was not a veteran, there was no flags other than funeral flags on the hearse and window tags on the cars in the procession and people still took a moment to pay respect by pulling over until we all drove by.
So if any of the members here from Bloomington or any that were in Bloomington were in any of the cars that pulled over for a funeral procession around 3 pm, thank you. You made a sad day a little brighter.

Sorry for your loss.... I always stop. Sometimes I pull over, sometimes I stop in the middle of the lane, it depends on how big of an ******* is behind me.... It's been common practice in our family to "block" cars trying to pass us while in a procession on a 2 lane road...

Thanks. Pulling over for funerals was one the first things I was taught about driving before I could even drive.

Was in a funeral procession a couple months ago in Lafayette. When we drove by the construction area on Sagamore pkwy, the construction workers paused, and removed their hats.

My crew did this when I worked for INDOT.

Can't do anything else, but we can be respectful.

I find that in most smaller towns in Indiana, people pull over to let the funeral procession pass by. In Indy, I've not seen people stop much.

That's pretty awesome that they did that.

One of the last processions I was in, there was some asshat passing us. He quickly got lit up by one of the cops escorting us. Was pretty satisfying.

I can't remember if the ones who do escort here are off-duty or retired so I don't know what powers they may have. They do a great job.

That is awesome of you guys. I would bet that people in the procession noticed and appreciated it.

    Sorry for your loss, Mutt.

Yesterday a car with New York plates drove through the orange construction barrels to pass me and several other cars on a bridge over the Wabash.

Purdue students are back and this kind of crap in now more frequent.

    Sorry for your loss too.

Thread hijack alert: I recently had a car with Illinois plates pull onto the shoulder of the road and pass me on the right because I slowed down for the school zone we were in. Unfortunately, no officer present to see it. Yes, school was in session, and it is an elementary school that is very near the road.

There are so many bad drivers in Bloomington that it's a rare day I don't cuss someone for how they drive.

I despise illinois drivers as a group. My wife used to live in Chicago, and I quickly learned that using turn signals before a lane change just made the other drivers speed up to cut you off. In West Lafayette, too many drivers go 20 in the school zone when 30 is legal, so no place is perfect, but at least the WL drivers aren't being jerks.

I am sorry for your loss. I lived in NJ for 10 years, and overall NJ and NY drivers were very good -- attentive, and drove in a way that made high volume traffic work. But they were terrible about pulling over for emergency vehicles and funerals.

It's hard to beat good old fashioned manners.
I recall about fifteen years ago meeting a funeral procession going through New Castle on Broad Street on a winter day when it was in the 20s.
I pulled over, then noticed a guy on a bicycle on the sidewalk across the street from me.
He stopped his bike, then took off his ski cap in respect and stood that way until the whole procession had passed.
A small gesture, but it's good to see that there are folks out there who still understand values.

That's pretty cool that he did that. I talked with some other family members since the other day and they were also amazed by the people pulling over and stopping.
