There are plenty of air rifles available that meet or exceed the speed of average .22lr. I was kinda hoping to get one for Christmas. Instead I got a really cool crossbow. I am NOT disappointed!

I have a Crosman MTR77NPC air rifle that shoots lead pellets at 1000 fps, and alloy pellets at 1200 fps. It actually has more of a recoil than my 10 22 does, and is almost as loud. Point it at someone and shoot? No freakin' way!

I have a Beeman that has a .17 and .22 barrel. I keep the .22 on it so that it is quiet. The .22 is close to 1000 fps

Shooting rats is a lot of fun. I used to do it as a kid, down by the railroad tracks, where grain used to fall off the cars. Those little pests are very quick.

I believe all air guns are treated like firearms under Michigan law, as well. Even expensive international match air guns. In Canada there are velocity restrictions on air guns and the velocity maximums are very low, like 500 fps.
