I have been shooting here with my kids over the years. One moved to Illinois and is a resident there now with an Illinois driver's license. He is now ready to purchase a handgun.
If he comes to visit and we go to a gun shop next weekend can he purchase one and take it home? If not, what will it take for him to be legal?

What about this... Let's say he takes a liking to one in my gun collection. Can I gift him one or can he purchase it from me and take it home to Chicago without restriction? It is for in home protection.

Even if you gift it or sell it to him, it still would need to go to an FFL for an out of state transfer. I believe the only exception is if it was willed to a person.

^^^^^ What Audie Said ^^^^^^^ Transfer of a handgun has to happen at an FFL in his home state.

Long guns have different rules, but the handgun rules are much more restrictive.
